The Sunday Turnaround Cleaning Checklist

A Sunday turnaround is the cleaning cycle that runs between the last service on Sunday and the building's first use the following week. For West Valley churches that run 7:30am, 9am and 11am services followed by fellowship hour, the turnaround window may be as short as two hours. For smaller congregations with a single 10am service, it may stretch through Sunday afternoon. Either way, the sequence matters.

Why a written checklist prevents friction

Verbal agreements between volunteers and cleaning contractors are the most common source of facility complaints we hear. Someone thought the cry room was included. Someone else thought the stage was out of scope. A written checklist, signed by the facilities director and the cleaning contractor, removes that ambiguity before the first Sunday.

The checklist, room by room

Entry and narthex

• Doors wiped inside and out, glass panels cleaned
• Welcome table cleared and wiped
• Floor swept and mopped or vacuumed
• Bulletin board checked for outdated materials (remove if instructed)
• Coat rack straightened

Sanctuary

• Each pew row: top rail wiped, cushion vacuumed, hymnal/Bible racks cleared of bulletins
• Center aisle carpet vacuumed; side aisles vacuumed or swept
• Aisle runner checked for buckling at seams; edges tucked if accessible
• Stage swept or vacuumed; pulpit and lectern wiped
• Altar rail or communion rail wiped
• Offering plate storage area tidied
• High ledges and ceiling fan blades dusted (on rotation, not every week)

Fellowship hall

• Tables wiped — tops, edges, leg brackets
• Chairs wiped and stacked or arranged per instructions
• Floor swept and mopped
• Kitchen: counters wiped, sink cleaned, appliance exteriors wiped, floor mopped
• Coffee station: urn cleaned or set aside, drip trays wiped
• Trash removed and liners replaced

Restrooms (all)

• Toilets and urinals scrubbed and disinfected
• Sinks and counters cleaned
• Mirrors cleaned
• Floors mopped
• Soap, paper towels and toilet paper restocked
• Trash removed

Nursery and classrooms (if used Sunday)

• Hard-surface toys disinfected
• Changing table sanitized
• Carpet vacuumed
• Trash removed
• Wipes and diaper station restocked

What a contractor does vs what volunteers can realistically do

Volunteers are typically willing to collect bulletins, straighten hymnals and set up for the following week. They are less likely to mop restrooms, sanitize nursery toys or clean grout lines between services. Being clear about which tasks go to the contractor and which stay with volunteers prevents the most common turnaround failures.

A note about the West Valley summer

Between June and September, fine Sonoran Desert dust enters buildings every time a door opens. In Sun City West specifically — where many church members arrive with mobility aids that carry outdoor particulate inside — sanctuary floors accumulate visible dust within 24 hours of a Saturday evening cleaning. If your congregation notices dusty pew rails on Sunday morning, the answer is usually a tighter pre-service wipe-down cycle, not a deeper Saturday clean.
